Continuing its foray into the 5G space, MediaTek has announced a new 5G chipset for budget smartphones. Named as Dimensity 700, it’s made on 7nm process, has speeds upto 2.77Gbps and supports two carrier 5G and 90Hz screen refresh rate on Android. MediaTek also teased a new flagship 5G chip codenamed “Premium Platform” coming soon.
MediaTek’s new 5G chip for budget smartphones
While Qualcomm is reigning the smartphone chip market, most of the budget and lower mid-segment is made up of MediaTek chips only. The Taiwanese company has missed the race of 4G to its bigger counterpart, Qualcomm. But it now seems to be jumping the boat early in 5G race, as it announced a third 5G chip in less than a year.
MediaTek has announced Dimensity series for the future lineup, under which, it unveiled Dimensity 1000, 1000+ and Dimensity 800 comes with 5G connectivity. While they’re intended for premium handsets, the new chip announced this week is for mid-ranger smartphones. Named as Dimensity 700 SoC, it’s made on TSMC’s 7nm process.
It’s reported to be an octa-core processor as usual and with top clocking speeds as 2.2GHz. Further, it supports 90Hz displays and the rear camera of upto 64-megapixel. Also, the AI camera is even more strengthened to include bokeh, beauty, colour optimization and hardware-based multi-frame noise reduction features. The 5G in here is said to be of dual carrier and have speeds upto 2.77Gbps.
Also, MediaTek has teased a flagship chipset coming soon. It’s codenamed as Premium Platform and could be fitting into premium handsets. It’s said to be possessing the ARM baser Cortex-A78 cores with upto 3.0GHz clock speeds. Other than these, no other details have been shared. It’s just interesting to see how this chip can take on Qualcomm’s next-gen chips like Snapdragon 875.
