DreamWorks Animation will open source its MoonRay renderer later this year

Later this year, DreamWorks will make its MoonRay ray-traced renderer available as open source software.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks will include its Arras cloud computing technology in the codebase.

We're excited to provide the vectorized, multi-threaded, parallel, and distributed source for moonRays, which has undergone more than a decade of study and development.

Every year, there is a greater need for large-scale rendering, and MoonRay will fill that need.

As DreamWorks continues to demonstrate its commitment to open source, we anticipate that the codebase will get stronger with community involvement.

In movies like The Hidden World, How You Train Your Dragon, and Croods: New Age, DreamWorks has utilised MoonRay.
