OnePlus 8: The affordable Flagship Phone?

Overview

Recently OnePlus came up with their two new flagships. The pro and non-pro model. The OnePlus 8 is a perfect affordable flagship without a few of OnePlus 8 Pro’s tricks. This device is made on a T and is a beat in that price segment.

The OnePlus 8 was unveiled worldwide on April 14, 2020 and on April 21 in Europe and April 29 in the United States alongside the high-end OnePlus 8 Pro. It is the fourteenth device from OnePlus after succeeding OnePlus 7T Pro.

Let’s jump right in for the detailed specifications of the device.

Specifications

Design

The all-new OnePlus 8 is crafted on an aluminum frame. The device has a classy glass back and front. The glass is 3D Corning Gorilla Glass. On the toughness norms, a big thumbs up. It also has an IP68 dust/water resistant rating. There are no backslashes on the protection side as such. The device comes in 3 assorted colors Onyx Black, Glacial Green, and Interstellar Glow.

The smooth matte surface of the device minimizes the fingerprints to a certain extent. The Interstellar Glow variant has a slightly reflective panel with the refraction of a few color tones. This for sure makes the variant a very elegant color choice. The device weighs approximately 180 grams, which is fair enough.

Display

OnePlus has made a significant feature distinction between the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro this year. For instance, the OnePlus 8 gets a 90Hz display whereas OnePlus 8 Pro features a 120Hz display.

The display is very impressive. The device has a 6.55 inches display with AMOLED touchscreen panel. The resolution is very brilliant, it is 2400 x 1080 pixels. It has 20:9 aspect ratio and 402 ppi. The display also supports HDR10+. The colors in the device are up to the notch. The edges of the devices are slightly curved though. The display unit is very engrossing.

Performance and Memory

Chipset – The device runs on the latest flagship chip, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. This octa-core processor is based on 7nm technology, delivering no amble experience. The configuration of the processor goes as 1 core @2.84 GHz, 3 cores @2.42 GHz & 4 cores @1.8 GHz, based on Kryo 585 cores.

The energy-efficient 4 cores work up to the mark. This processor is coupled with Adreno 650 GPU. This is an efficient GPU used in OnePlus 8 Pro as well. The phone is going to deliver an absolute gaming performance also.

Memory – On coming to memory, the device has 8GB/12GB of RAM options. The RAM is LPDDR4X memories, which is more than enough to run extreme tasks. The device has 2 internal storage options as well. The internal storage options of the device are 128GB and 256GB. The storage is based on UFS 3.0(2-Lane) technology. The company advertised that there will be an enhanced Snapdragon 865 experience.

Other Aspects – The other performance parameters are very good as well. The device runs on the latest Android 10, with its custom UI, ‘OXYGEN OS’. The device gives very near to stock Android experience. OnePlus 8 has 5G connectivity support as well. The 5G chip is X55 chipset, which shows amazing on-paper performance.

Camera

Many critics out there believes camera to be not a very admiring side for OnePlus devices. This time OnePlus somehow tackled it. However, The OnePlus 8 misses the standard telephoto camera and swaps it for a macro unit.

Triple-Camera setup on the Rear panel

Rear OnePlus 8 uses a triple camera system. The triple camera system has a 48-megapixel (f/1.75) wide-angle lens, one 16-megapixel (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle lens, and lastly 2-megapixel (f/2.4) macro lens. The main 48-megapixel snapper has Sony IMX586 sensor, which embedded with OIS and EIS support. The camera will deliver amazing performance this time.

Front Coming to the front unit, it’s a 16-megapixel snapper with the aperture of f/2.45. This has a Sony IMX471 sensor. The front camera is a wide-angle camera that has EIS support also. It is a punch-hole camera on the front just like it’s pro variant. However, there is a backslash in the camera this time which I have discussed in detail in the ‘final impression’ below.

Videography The device supports 4K video recording at 30/60 fps and 1080p recording at 30/60 fps on the rear. There is the support of popular Super Slow Motion in 1080p recording at240 fps, 720p slo-mo video at 480 fps. The front is restricted to 1080p recording at 30fps.

Battery

The device has a little less battery capacity than its superior pro variant. The devices draw power from a 4300 mAh non-removable battery pack. The OnePlus 8 supports fast charging called Warp Charge 30T Fast Charging. On a more clarifying manner, it supports 30W fast charging. The fast charger is available in-box.

Final Impression

The final on-paper review is very good for this device. There are a few features on OnePlus 8 Pro that are not available for OnePlus 8. Those few unavailabilities are battery capacity, 120Hz display, and camera as well.

However, there is a major backslash of the camera. Now the trend is for higher optical zooms, the OnePlus 8 lacks that flagship quality. Thus, making it a little weaker competitor in flagship segments. Anyways, the price point is enough to have a flagship’s speed, feel, built quality and camera. On an overall basis, the device is awesome in its price point, one should definitely go for it in that budget segment.
