How to send and receive money with WhatsApp Payments


With the digital payment industry booming in India, Facebook launching WhatsApp Pay in the country is imminent. The world’s largest instant messenger has announced this service for Indians after two years of trails and lets them transfer money as simple as sending a message. If you’re interested to know how, here’s how to do it;

How to Send Money in WhatsApp?

Initially, users should register themselves to the service before making any payments. Thus, follow the below steps;

In your WhatsApp, Go to Settings

> Payments > Add payment method.

You’ll be asked to choose your bank. After selecting the bank, you should verify your phone number by clicking on Verify via SMS.

Note: You should be using your bank’s registered phone number as your WhatsApp number since it automatically verifies from the device by sending a message.

Once the verification process is done, you can check that your bank has been added and start sending money to your contacts. For this,

Open a WhatsApp chat and tap on the attachment (clip) icon.

Click on Payment > Type in the amount > Send.

You’ll be asked to enter your UPI PIN to authentic the transaction.

Note: If you’re registering for the first time, you’ll be asked to enter your debit card details and CVV code while registering. This is where you’ll be setting your UPI PIN.

Transactions to WhatsApp contacts happen only if the receiver to has added his bank account in a similar process. Else, you’ll be notified about this. Also, you can send money to UPI IDs directly if not by WhatsApp Pay. For this, you have to select Send to a UPI ID

in the Payment option, and enter UPI ID > Verify to continue.

WhatsApp uses the same underlying payments infrastructure as PhonePe, GPay, FreeCharge etc. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in a framework made by NPCI, India’s payment authority, and supplied to other third-party services to work on this. It processes transactions almost instantly, and have picked up pace in usage since after the Indian demonetization.
